On the year 10 London trip I went to the Radical eye exhibition, there was a wide selection of images, some being abstract and some being emotional. The exhibition was fairly short however I would've recommended it.
Dorothea Lange-Migrant Mother
Out of all the photos in the Radical Eye Exhibition, I chose Migrant Mother by Dorothea Lange.
I chose this photo because the image really captures the emotion of the mother and the two children. It looks like the mother is going through a really depressing time, maybe waiting for her husband to come back or her husband has died, which would explain why the children look very sad.
In the photo the main subject is at a high enough focus to enjoy it, also the two boy are more out of focus than the mother but that's because the mother is the main subject, and the two boys complete the image. I can't rally tell because its black and white and her eyes are too small but i'm guessing it's natural light because it was taken a long time ago. I also think it is about midday because the light is not too harsh. The dominant lines on the photo are probably the crease marks in the clothing which could suggest that they have been worn all the time so they only have one set of clothes. There is a sort of fake symmetry in which the mother is in the center of the image and the two boys are on either side of her, doing the same thing. There is not that much depth to the photo, everything is mainly at the same distance away from the camera. There is a bit of negative space in the top left corner of the image. If I could reach out and touch the surface of the photograph I would feel rough and worn out, like the mother. There is not a lot of contrast between the light and the dark, which makes it less pleasing to look at. The two boys are on the thirds which is appealing to the viewer however the mother is right in the center of the image. Also there is a mixed height difference between the three subjects which makes it more interesting. The exposure is pretty good, it's not too bright and not too dark however at the bottom middle it's really bright.
The artist of this photo,Dorothea Lange was an American photographer who typically liked to capture depressing moments of peoples lives. She was born on the 26th of May 1895 and died at the age of 70 in 1965.
